GPT-6 and Intelligent UI in ChatGPT: what changed

What GPT-6 and Intelligent UI change in ChatGPT: interactive answers, answering while thinking, faster search, and who gets which model.

Quick answer: on 7 October 2026 OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 with Intelligent UI in ChatGPT's Chat tab. Answers can now include graphics, buttons, forms, charts and other interactive elements, and ChatGPT can start answering while it's still thinking. Paid tiers get GPT-6 Sol and Free and Go get GPT-6 Luna. The models behind Work and Codex didn't change.

Key facts

  • Announced 7 October 2026. The rollout started with Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, and Free and Go followed the next day.
  • Powered by GPT-6 Sol (paid tiers) and GPT-6 Luna (Free, Go), both tuned for everyday conversation.
  • Intelligent UI: answers can include graphics, buttons, forms, charts and interactive elements.
  • With web search, GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant, per OpenAI.
  • Work and Codex models are unchanged. GPT-5.5 retires from ChatGPT, Work and Codex on 14 October.

What Intelligent UI is

OpenAI says it taught GPT-6 to build answers from text, graphics and interactive elements, with a layout chosen for the question. A comparison can appear side by side, an explanation as an interactive diagram, and a plain question still gets plain text. OpenAI's examples include a cooking timeline beside a recipe, road-trip stops on a map, interactive explainers such as the Monty Hall problem, and small tools on request, like a bill splitter or a savings calculator.

We built a library of native, streamable components, along with a compiler that processes the interface as the model generates it.

Thanks to that compiler, the interface appears bit by bit as the model writes, so you don't wait for the whole response. OpenAI says there's "still work ahead" on the model's design judgment.

Answering while thinking

GPT-6 can mix thinking with answering. It writes the answer in parts as it goes instead of making you wait for the reasoning to finish. In OpenAI's internal evaluation of everyday agentic tasks, GPT-6 Extra High starts answering as quickly as GPT-5.6 Medium and scores better overall than GPT-5.6 Extra High. For questions that need web search, OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. It also says GPT-6 is better at deciding when to look something up. These are OpenAI's own numbers.

Who gets which model

  • Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise: GPT-6 Sol, from 7 October. For Enterprise, availability depends on workspace admin settings.
  • Free and Go: GPT-6 Luna, from 8 October.
  • Work and Codex: no model change in this update. OpenAI's Codex docs recommend GPT-6.1 Sol there.

Safety notes

OpenAI says GPT-6 resists attempts to bypass its safety training better than GPT-5.6 Sol, especially attacks that adapt over several turns. It also says GPT-6 is better at stating the limits of what it can do, and that it was trained to avoid needless refusals of harmless requests. Details are in OpenAI's system card.

Related change: GPT-5.5 retires 14 October

OpenAI's models page says GPT-5.5 retires from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex on all plans on 14 October 2026. The API isn't affected. Codex users who still pick gpt-5.5 in configs, scripts or scheduled tasks should switch to GPT-6 Sol on paid plans, or to GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go.
