Claude Fable 5.5: what we know and what the leaks say

Anthropic hasn't announced Claude Fable 5.5. Here's what is official today, what the rumors claim, who said it, and the one technical trace found so far.

Quick answer: Claude Fable 5.5 has not been announced. As of 13 October 2026, Anthropic's models overview lists Claude Fable 5.1 as the current Fable model, next to Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5. Since 1 October, users on X have claimed that some Fable 5.1 requests are being routed to a newer model, and a release date predicted for 6 October came and went. The only technical trace so far is a model row named claude-fable-5-5 that appeared in Azure's model list on 13 October, with no price or specs. Everything below that isn't from Anthropic is unconfirmed.

Key facts

  • Official: the current Fable model is Claude Fable 5.1 (claude-fable-5-1), released 1 September 2026, at $10 / $50 per million input/output tokens.
  • Official: Anthropic has published no Fable 5.5 announcement, model page, model ID, price or benchmark.
  • Rumor: since 1 October, users say claude.ai and Claude Code sometimes answer as a stronger model while the picker still shows Fable 5.1.
  • Rumor that didn't happen: a Fable 5.5 release on Tuesday 6 October.
  • Trace: on 13 October an automated LiteLLM pull request added azure_ai/claude-fable-5-5 after the model showed up in Azure's Models API. Its price fields are copied from Fable 5.1.

What Anthropic has actually released

Anthropic's current lineup, per its models overview: Claude Fable 5.1 for demanding reasoning and long-horizon agentic work ($10 / $50), Opus 5.5 for long-running agentic coding and knowledge work ($4 / $20, released 22 September), Sonnet 5.5 ($2 / $10, 28 September) and Haiku 5.5 (from $0.10 / $0.50, 7 October). All four have a 1M-token context window. Anthropic tells developers to start with Opus 5.5 for most work and move to Fable 5.1 when Opus 5.5 at higher effort still falls short. With Opus, Sonnet and Haiku now on 5.5, Fable is the only line still on 5.1, which is why many people expect a Fable 5.5. That expectation is an inference from the naming, not something Anthropic has said.

The routing claims

On 1 October, Chetaslua (@chetaslua) posted that "Fable 5.5 is auto routing on web" and asked people to check claude.ai. Other users posted animations, games and short films they said came from the routed model. On 4 October, Mark Kretschmann (@mark_k) summed up the claims and the limits of the evidence:

Anthropic hasn't confirmed the model or the date, and the demos alone can't establish what's running behind the scenes.

— Mark Kretschmann (@mark_k) · Read the original

That's the core problem with these posts: the screenshots show the Fable 5.1 label, and a good demo doesn't prove which model made it. On 12 October, TestingCatalog reported a similar wave of claims about Opus 5.5 requests and wrote that it was unclear whether any new checkpoint would be called Opus 5.6 or Fable 5.5. Its evidence was also posts on X, not app strings or code.

The release-date rumor

On 1 October, the account @imjustnewatai wrote that Fable 5.5 was "expected to release next week" and that they were "hearing of a Tuesday release", without naming a source. The next day Chubby (@kimmonismus) shared it with the caveat "I can't verify any of this." No Fable model came out on Tuesday 6 October. On 11 October @kimmonismus posted again that a release "should be near", based on the same routing reports. That's a prediction, not a leak, and we haven't found any named reporter at The Information, Bloomberg or The Verge reporting a Fable 5.5 date.

The Azure model row

This is the only piece of evidence that isn't a screenshot or a demo. On 13 October, LiteLLM's provider-sync bot opened pull request #46201, "add azure_ai/claude-fable-5-5", and it was merged the same day. The PR says Azure's Models API in the eastus2 region lists the model as Anthropic version 1, marked GenerallyAvailable, with a deprecation date of 5 December 2027. It also says plainly that no source states a price, context window or capability for Fable 5.5 yet, so the bot copied those fields from Fable 5.1. A row in a cloud catalog suggests the name exists somewhere in Microsoft's systems. It doesn't tell you when the model launches, what it costs or how good it is.

What's confirmed vs. rumored

  • Confirmed: Fable 5.1 is the current Fable model, at $10 / $50 per million tokens with a 1M context window (Anthropic docs).
  • Confirmed: Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 are out (22 Sep, 28 Sep and 7 Oct 2026).
  • Confirmed: a model ID azure_ai/claude-fable-5-5 was added to LiteLLM on 13 October after it appeared in Azure's Models API (GitHub PR #46201).
  • Not confirmed: that Fable 5.5 exists as a finished model, or that anyone is being routed to it.
  • Not confirmed: any release date. The 6 October date was wrong.
  • Not confirmed: price, context window, benchmarks or plan access. Any figures you see are guesses or copied from Fable 5.1.
