Anthropic adds physicist Christopher Stubbs to its Long-Term Benefit Trust
Christopher Stubbs, an experimental physicist and former Dean of Science at Harvard, has become a trustee of Anthropic's Long-Term Benefit Trust. The Trust can appoint a majority of Anthropic's board and advises its leadership on decisions about the risks and societal impacts of AI.
On 21 October 2026 Anthropic announced that Dr. Christopher Stubbs has joined its Long-Term Benefit Trust. Stubbs is the Samuel C. Moncher Professor of Physics and of Astronomy at Harvard, where he was Dean of Science from 2018 to 2024. His work spans observational cosmology and precision measurement. He has advised the US government on national security and arms control, and he is a member of JASON, an independent group of scientists that has advised the US government on defense and technology since 1960.
In 1998, as part of the High-Z Supernova Search Team, he helped discover that the expansion of the universe is accelerating, work for which the team later received the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. He was also the first project scientist of what is now the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. More recently he has written about keeping AI-assisted research reproducible when models give different answers to the same question.
Anthropic is a Public Benefit Corporation, and the Trust is meant to help it balance commercial growth with its public benefit purpose over the long term. Trustees are independent of the company's management and investors. Stubbs, the Trust's first physicist, serves alongside chair Neil Buddy Shah, national security expert Richard Fontaine and former Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke.
