Codex & OpenAI week in review: GPT-6 for everyone, composer predictions, MXC on Windows
GPT-6 with Intelligent UI in ChatGPT, composer predictions, a new Windows sandbox, Ultrafast Sol, Codex CLI 0.161–0.162.1 and Ambassador applications.
It was a busy week on the OpenAI side, and not only because of the daily 28-day challenge (see our separate tracker). Here's everything else Codex and ChatGPT users should know, linked to official sources.
GPT-6 and Intelligent UI in ChatGPT (7 Oct)
OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 with Intelligent UI in the ChatGPT Chat tab, starting with Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise and expanding to Free and Go the next day. With Intelligent UI, an answer can include charts, buttons, forms and small interactive tools instead of plain text. Paid tiers get GPT-6 Sol and Free and Go get GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI says the models powering Work and Codex are not changing in this release. It also says GPT-6 Instant starts answering web-search questions 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant.
Codex app and models
- Composer predictions (beta, Pro): Codex can suggest your next message based on the conversation and how you talk to it. OpenAI Developers calls it "One of the most loved new features we've ever tested internally." Post
- GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast (8 Oct): a faster token-generation mode in Codex and ChatGPT Work, available on Pro $500 and eligible Enterprise and Edu plans (off by default for Enterprise). Changelog
- Windows sandbox on MXC (9 Oct): a new sandbox mode built on Microsoft's Execution Containers, promising faster setup, stronger network enforcement and finer file-access controls. It needs a compatible Windows 11 device. Per the docs, the desktop app prefers MXC automatically where supported, and CLI users can opt in with prefer_mxc = true under [features]. Post · Docs
- Plugin extensions for ChatGPT (7 Oct): plugins can launch from the sidebar, support @ mentions and add file viewers. Post
Codex CLI releases
- 0.161.0 (7 Oct): GPT-6.1 Sol becomes the default in the bundled and Amazon Bedrock catalogs, /mcp login <name> signs in to MCP servers from the terminal, and you can pick your microphone and speaker for voice.
- 0.162.0 (8 Oct): managed Git worktree tools, task pinning in the Command Center with p, /copy for transcript blocks, clickable URLs in prompts and banners, CRLF line endings preserved in apply_patch, and a signed PowerShell installer for Windows.
- 0.162.1 (9 Oct): fixes a TUI crash on multi-line questions and startup failures caused by background-server feature mismatches.
