How to check your version and update Claude Code

  1. Check the installed version:
    claude --version
  2. Native installs update themselves in the background. To update right now:
    claude update
  3. Install exactly 2.1.309 (macOS, Linux, WSL):
    curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash -s 2.1.309
  4. Homebrew does not auto-update. The claude-code cask follows the stable channel, claude-code@latest the latest one:
    brew upgrade claude-code
  5. WinGet:
    winget upgrade Anthropic.ClaudeCode
  6. npm (use install @latest, not npm update -g):
    npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code@latest

Claude Code has two release channels: latest (the default) gets every version as it ships; stable runs about a week behind and skips releases with major regressions. Change it under /config → Auto-update channel or with the autoUpdatesChannel setting.
