Claude usage limits and resets explained: Pro, Max and Team

How Claude's 5-hour session and weekly limits work on Pro, Max and Team, how Claude Code shares them, and every Anthropic limit reset we've tracked.

Quick answer: paid Claude plans have two usage limits. A session limit resets every five hours, and a weekly limit resets at a fixed time assigned to your account. Claude in the apps and Claude Code share the same pool. Max gives 5x or 20x Pro's per-session usage. Team Standard seats get 1.25x Pro and Premium seats 6.25x. Your next weekly reset time is in Settings > Usage. Anthropic sometimes resets limits early; our archive lists 13 such resets since April 2026.

Key facts

  • Session limit: resets every five hours (Pro, Max, Team).
  • Weekly limit: applies across all models and resets at a fixed weekly time assigned to your account. Max also has a separate weekly limit for Fable.
  • Claude, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all draw from the same limits.
  • Pro: $20/month. Max 5x: $100/month. Max 20x: $200/month. Team: $20 or $100 per seat per month, billed annually.
  • In Claude Code, /usage shows plan usage limits. In the apps, check Settings > Usage.
  • A redeemable reset granted on 22 September can be used until 22 October 2026, according to ClaudeDevs.

Session limits and weekly limits

Anthropic's help center says paid plans have "two types of usage limits": a session limit that resets every five hours and weekly limits that reset once a week. How fast you use them depends on conversation length and complexity, the features you use, the model you choose and the effort level. Per the Pro and Max plan pages, the weekly limit resets at a fixed time assigned to your account, and you get your full weekly allowance each cycle. Anthropic adds that it may also apply other caps, such as weekly or monthly caps or limits on specific models or features.

How much each plan gets

  • Free: "covers everyday questions", per claude.com/pricing. Pro gives at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free. The pricing table doesn't include Claude Code on Free.
  • Pro ($20/month, or $17/month billed annually): includes Claude Code.
  • Max 5x ($100/month) and Max 20x ($200/month): 5x or 20x Pro's per-session allowance, billed monthly only. They also include $100 or $200 a month in API credits, which can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps.
  • Team Standard ($20/seat/month annually, $25 monthly): 1.25x Pro's per-session allowance, per Anthropic's Team page.
  • Team Premium ($100/seat/month annually, $125 monthly): 6.25x Pro's per-session allowance. Team limits are per member, not pooled.

Claude Code uses the same limits

According to Use Claude Code with your Pro or Max plan, usage in Claude (web, desktop, mobile) and Claude Code comes out of one pool, and IDE usage counts too. When you hit a limit, you can wait for the reset, upgrade, turn on usage credits, or switch to a Console account with API credits. One gotcha: if the ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code uses that key and bills API rates instead of your plan. The Claude Code commands reference says /usage shows session cost, plan usage limits and activity stats.

Limit changes in 2026

  • 29 Aug: ClaudeDevs said that from 14 September, standard weekly limits in Claude Code would rise permanently by 25% for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise.
  • 22 Sep (Opus 5.5 launch): 5-hour session limits in Claude Code went up 20%, and Pro, Max and Team users got a reset to use anytime.
  • 1 Oct: for two weeks, design, deck and doc work started in the Claude app uses 50% less of your usage limits, per @claudeai.

We granted all Pro, Max, and Team users a reset last Tuesday. If you haven't used it yet, you can still apply it whenever you want, before Oct 22.

Every Claude reset we've tracked

Our Claude reset archive lists 13 early resets announced on X, by month: April 2026: 2, May: 1, June: 5, July: 3, September: 2. There were none in August, which brought limit increases instead of resets. The first came on 16 April, after a bug in how long-context Opus 4.7 requests were counted. The most recent ones were on 1 September, when Fable 5.1 launched, and 4 September, a weekly-limit reset for Max subscribers posted by Lydia Hallie of Anthropic. The archive was last fully reviewed on 29 September.

With Fable 5.1 out today, we've also reset 5-hour and weekly limits for all users.
