Codex usage resets: complete history and how they work
Every Codex usage reset we've tracked since September 2025, month by month, plus what completed, announced and banked resets mean.
Quick answer: a Codex usage reset is when OpenAI refills everyone's Codex usage limits early, so you get a full allowance before it would have come back on its own. In the MYPC98 archive, every reset was announced on X by Tibo (@thsottiaux), who leads Codex at OpenAI. We've logged 39 reset entries between 17 September 2025 and 11 October 2026. How Codex usage limits work
Codex is included in ChatGPT plans, and ChatGPT Work shares the same pricing, credits and limits. OpenAI's pricing page gives estimates of local messages per five-hour period for Plus and Standard Business. It notes that Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit and that weekly limits may also apply. The page calls these numbers estimates, not fixed message limits. A normal refill happens on its own when your window rolls over. A reset is different: OpenAI restores everyone's limits early, usually after an outage, a slow model launch, or as a goodwill gesture.
Completed, announced and banked: what the labels mean
- Completed: an original post confirms the reset has rolled out, like "Reset all propagated" on 2 October 2026. Nine of our 39 entries have that confirmation.
- Reset report: a post says a reset happened or is happening, without a separate follow-up saying it finished.
- Announced: a reset is promised for later, like "Global reset by EOD" on 10 October 2026. We don't count it as done until it's confirmed.
- Banked: a reset credit loaded into your account that you use when you choose. On Day 3 of the 28-day series, Tibo announced one for every paid account, and on 8 October he confirmed it had landed.
Our reset page keeps these apart because one post doesn't always mean one reset. Plan changes, credit top-ups and promises are listed as context, not as resets.

October 2026: the 28-day series
October has been unusually busy. On 2 October Tibo announced a global reset for paid ChatGPT accounts after a slow GPT-6.1 Sol start, and confirmed it the same day. Pro 500 accounts that missed it were fixed early on 3 October. On 4 October he started a 28-day series in which each day brings either a clear improvement or a full reset. Since then, a community vote led to a reset on 7 October, a banked reset landed on 8 October, and a global reset announced on 10 October was confirmed as propagated at 04:01 UTC on 11 October. - After a reset, check your usage dashboard. A rollout can take hours, and some plans have been missed and fixed later, as Pro 500 was on 3 October.
