What is a usage reset? Codex and Claude explained

Reset or normal refill?

Usage limits refill on their own. On Claude's paid plans, the session limit resets every five hours and the weekly limit at a fixed time assigned to your account. OpenAI describes Codex allowances per five-hour period and says weekly limits may also apply. A usage reset is different: the provider sets everyone's limits, or a group's, back to full early. Past resets followed slowdowns, launches and billing bugs. OpenAI's first Codex reset in our archive, in September 2025, made up for slowdowns while it added GPUs. Anthropic reset Claude limits on 16 April 2026 after fixing a long-context accounting bug, and again when Fable 5.1 launched on 1 September 2026.

How our archive labels resets

• Completed: an original post confirms the reset rolled out, like Tibo's "All propagated" on 11 October 2026.
• Reset report: a post says a reset happened, without a separate confirmation that it finished.
• Announced: a reset is promised, like "Global reset by EOD" on 10 October 2026. It isn't counted until confirmed.
• Banked reset: a saved reset you apply later. See banked reset.
• Update: limit changes, reminders and other context.

Only Completed and Reset report entries count toward our reset totals, and the last-reset counter moves only on a completion report. A post's time isn't proof of when a reset ran. Our verification rules explain the details.

How to check your own limits

For Codex, open the usage dashboard or run /status in the CLI. OpenAI says its support team can't reset ChatGPT or Codex limits. For Claude, open Settings > Usage, or run /usage in Claude Code. A rollout can take hours, so check again later if a reset hasn't reached you.
